Deansgate-Castlefield Station

Over 150sq.m of toughened laminated glass for the modern glass staircase

Romag were commissioned by client Shawton Engineering to supply the toughened laminated glass balustrading for the impressive remodelling of Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink Station.

Designed by architects SimpsonHaugh and Partners, the project is part of Metrolink’s Second City Crossing project, and linked to a £1bn transport investment plan over the next two years.

The station was last updated in the 1980s and the new design sheds the dreary Perspex carapace to pave the way for modern architecture and techniques to redefine the station as a robust beauty that encapsulates an urban oasis.

The new station consists of two elegant staircases and two station platforms with Romag printed and shaped glass.

The solution

More than 150 sq. m of Romag’s high performance architectural toughened safety glass has been manufactured and supplied for the newly upgraded external staircase system at Deansgate-Castlefield passenger stop on the city centre Metrolink tramway system.

Panels of clear Romag safety glass have also been installed to provide a protective safety walling feature on the new First Street Bridge, which spans the Deansgate Locks to provide easy access for passengers’ going to and from the tram stop.

The installation was produced using 25.5mm toughened sheets and heat soaked with SGP interlayer and polished edges.

Installation work was completed in a few days by Warrington-based structural steelwork and architectural metalwork designers and fabricators Shawton Engineering following delivery of the glass to site.

The result

The result is an outstanding work of modern, state of the art architecture that will stand the test of time.

What they say

The high quality, high performance architectural glass will provide an impressive addition to the installation and will significantly contribute to enhancing the environment as well as public safety.

Romag provided excellent advice and service when we were specifying glass for the project and delivered what was promised quickly and on time.
