Sainsbury's Nine Elms

High performance architectural laminated safety glass for Sainsbury’s newly refurbished Nine Elms store in London.

High performance architectural laminated safety glass from specialist manufacturer Romag has been specified for Sainsbury’s newly refurbished Nine Elms store in London.

Opened in October 2016, the 6,100 sq. m Nine Elms is Sainsbury’s latest ‘store of the future’ development, incorporating a combination of Argos and Habitat shop-in-shops. The overall mixed-use development features the residential element to help finance the refurbishment of the store that has been in place for over 30 years.

The solution

More than 150 sq. m of clear glass has been cut and supplied by Dellner Romag as the central feature of a 100 m long freestanding balustrade that runs along the top of the store’s main frontage elevation.

This has been installed as an additional safety precaution for the residents moving into the newly built luxury apartments above the store, who will benefit from access to the open area roof top gardens and leisure space.

Precision engineered to withstand a specified line load of 3Kn/m, the 1.5 m high glass balustrade has been designed and installed by Enfield-based aluminium curtain walling, window and façade designers, M Price.

The result

The result is a visually spectacular store with the balustrade providing an elegant finish, that doesn’t detract from the Sainsbury’s brand yet still serves as an attractive and safe feature of the residential area.

What they say

“The specification required a high quality glass solution to ensure the safety of the residents. Dellner Romag has not only achieved this but provided an eye-catching feature that really enhances the scheme’s overall aesthetics.”
