The awards scheme, which is only available for businesses in the North-East and Cumbria, is sponsored by the Northern TUC and is supported and endorsed by Public Health England.
It provides a framework for employers seeking to improve the general health and wellbeing of their employees and recognises those employers for their achievements in this area. There is a high focus on employee participation and delivery of Wellbeing Campaigns relevant to the employees.
For the Silver Award we ran campaigns on Mental Health, the Environment, Better Sleep and Work Life Balance incorporating activities such as quizzes, photography competitions, wildlife surveys and creating a map of the hobbies and interests of the people who work at the Consett site.
In the background we also worked on providing information about heathy eating and support for those experiencing domestic violence, ensuring that visitors and contractors to the site were aware of any relevant health and safety risks, providing support to employees with long-term illnesses and updating some of our policies and procedures.
We are aiming for the Gold Better Health at Work Award for Consett and the Bronze Thrive at Work Award for Tamworth during 2026. Thrive is a similar scheme to Better Health at Work run by Staffordshire County Council.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to achieving the Silver Award, especially the Consett Health Advocate volunteers.
